Utah law requires all registered vehicles to carry minimum liability insurance. If you’re caught without it — whether in a traffic stop, an accident, or a registration check — the consequences are real and they compound fast.
Utah’s Minimum Insurance Requirements
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $65,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $15,000 property damage liability per accident
- $3,000 PIP (Utah is a no-fault state)
What Happens If You’re Caught Without Insurance
Traffic Stop
In Utah, driving without insurance is a class B misdemeanor — not just a ticket. Consequences include citation, fines, and possible vehicle impoundment.
Accident Without Insurance
You are personally liable for all damages and medical expenses, your license will be suspended, and you’ll likely be required to file an SR-22.
The Fines and Penalties
- First offense: Minimum $400 fine + license suspension
- Reinstatement fee: $100–$200+
- SR-22 requirement: Typically 3 years
What Is SR-22?
A certificate your insurance company files with the Utah DLD to prove you carry required coverage. Not every company offers SR-22 filing — I work with carriers that do. Learn more about SR-22 here.
