Trucking Insurance for Utah Owner-Operators: What You Actually Need

If you’re running your own truck in Utah — whether you’re hauling freight down I-15, doing local deliveries, or pulling a flatbed out of Utah County — standard commercial auto insurance isn’t going to cut it.

Trucking insurance is its own category. The requirements are specific, the carriers are specialized, and the wrong policy can leave you personally on the hook for a loss that should have been covered.

What the FMCSA Requires

If you operate under your own authority and cross state lines, the FMCSA requires:

  • $750,000 minimum liability for general freight
  • $1,000,000 for household goods movers
  • $5,000,000 for hazardous materials

Your policy must include an MCS-90 endorsement.

The Coverages Every Owner-Operator Should Know

Primary Liability

Required by the FMCSA. Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating under dispatch.

Physical Damage

Covers your truck and trailer from collision, theft, fire, and weather.

Motor Truck Cargo

Covers the freight you’re hauling if it’s damaged, stolen, or destroyed.

Non-Trucking Liability (Bobtail)

Covers you when driving your truck for personal use — not under dispatch.

Trailer Interchange

Covers trailers you pull but don’t own.

Occupational Accident

Provides benefits for medical expenses, disability, and accidental death if you’re injured on the job.

Common Mistakes Utah Owner-Operators Make

  1. Using a personal auto policy — won’t cover a commercial truck
  2. Buying the cheapest policy without checking the carrier
  3. Skipping cargo coverage
  4. Lapses in coverage — even one day can jeopardize your operating authority
